If you have anxiety , you know how hard it can be to do well in a job interview. It’s so hard to walk into an interview confidently, comfortably for someone with anxiety or even low self esteem, and feel like your doing well. There are a few tips I have used myself to help me get through a job interview. These tips will help you build confidence and hopefully lower the amount of worrying that comes anxiety.
The first tip I have is to get to know the company. Research the company you are applying for. It’s important to know what the atmosphere is like, employees experiences, customer experiences. It’s like getting to know someone before you actually meet them. This creates a sense of comfort and it help when answering the interview questions. I think this is a good tip for anyone really but, it will benefit someone with anxiety because you are not going into something unexpected.
The second tip is know what they are going to ask. The great thing is that most interview consist of similar questions. The questions are going to be about you and how you can contribute to the company. I think writing down a list of things you are good at and maybe even a summary about your life. A lot of people freeze when someone asks them to give information about themselves or to list things about themselves. So figuring these things out before hand will help alot. The three biggest questions to look for and that can get you stuck are, tell me about yourself?, Why do you want to join the company?, and where do you see yourself in 5 years? Have an idea about what you are going to say but don’t memorize what you are going to say. You want the word to come out as if it just popped in to your head. The next tip will help with this.
Okay so now that you have done all this preparing, it’s now time to forget. I know this sounds crazy but it’s the best thing to do. As someone with anxiety I tend to dwell on things that I have to do and I know that I am nervous/ anxious about it. And dwelling on things makes you worry , it gets you stuck. That’s what we don’t want to do and it’s the worst thing you can do. I like to get those two tips out the way and then move on with my day. I will distract myself with other things like watching a movie, writing, dancing sitting on my balcony. And then skip to the day of the interview and then all of a sudden you remember something and it’s the first two tips I gave you. You are calm and confident because you didn’t spend time over analyzing and beating yourself up and plus you are prepared.
Another tip is to give yourself affirmations to read that can induce confidence within your self. and sometimes giving yourself a pep talk filled with positive things is the best way to sullen anxiety. A few things I like to say to my self is life is good, life is great, and life is young. Saying these things help me keep a positive state of mind and hopefully will help you.
And last but not least, don’t forget to smile. When it all goes to shit, smile!I know this doesn’t seem like a big tip but it is scientifically prove to brighten your day, brighten someone else’s day, or influence someone’s view of you with a smile. I can’t tell you how many people have complimented me or come up to me and say I have a nice smile.
Following these tips will have you walking out of your interview like your somebody worth a billion. And ultimately you are going to boost your confidence. Anyway, I hope these tips were helpful and I wish you well on your job interview.
